In the 1970s I proposed "the anthropology of sound" as a corrective the limitations of the Merriam and Blacking paradigms for musical anthropology. Over the next twenty years, with field research in Papua New Guinea, this anthropology of sound approach demonstrated new approaches to the anthropology of voice, to ecological and aesthetic co-evolution, to sonic relations across species, and to sonic mediatization and circulation. Since the 1990s I have expanded these concerns through the concept of acoustemology, from acoustics + epistemology, meaning sound as a way of knowing. I have also expanded the terrain of research beyond the tropical rainforest to both rural and urban settings in Europe, Japan, and Ghana, as well as to recording studios and global music circulations, including cyberspace. In this talk I will reflect on some key propositions from this work.

LESC CREM Picto C webThe CREM (Centre for Research in Ethnomusicology) seminar takes place on two Mondays per month, from 10:00 to 12:00. Members of the CREM (doctoral students included) and invited researchers present their ongoing work. The presentations last 50 minutes, and are followed by a coffee break and discussion hour.

Occasionally, the seminar takes the form of a workshop which brings together several researchers around a common theme. In these cases, the seminar takes place over an afternoon, or sometimes an entire day.

Participation in the seminar is open to everyone. It is also integrated into the Master’s degree in ethnomusicology at the Universities of Paris Nanterre and Paris Saint-Denis.
