Risks, Perceptions, and Life Histories: Socio-anthropological approaches in the Estarreja/Aveiro Context (Portugal)
From the chemical products industrial site of Estarreja to the Rede Natura 20000 protected lagoon of Aveiro, life history collections, whether from the factory or the surrounding polluted glands, this project is one of the first socio-anthropological analyses of the perceptions of sanitary and environmental risks.
Through a socio-anthropological approach in the context of Estarreja/Aveiro, the project aims to shed light on certain logics adopted by populations in order to adapt a polluted space. The method consists of gathering life histories from factory workers as well as farmers of contaminated/polluted land, while paying particular attention to the memory of the facts and contexts that enabled the development of the industrial sector, from both the past and today. The project also aims to create a press kit, and analyse it, in order to retrace the history of the current situation, and its direct link with the Aveiro protected site, just a few kilometres from the polluted areas. Perceptions of risk, adaptations, alternatives and contradictions: through this field research, with help from socio-anthropological methods, this study contributes a complementary, and necessary, social science element into the hard science research implemented on this site.
