Healing in the din of history. Doctors under the Khmer Rouge
Présentation
Engaging with research conducted for my book Cambodge: soigner dans le fracas de l’histoire, this chapter considers narratives relating to the experiences of medical doctors in Democratic Kampuchea. Some of the doctors worked for the Revolution, while others were targeted by it. In their accounts, the doctors bear witness not just to the lives of others but also to themselves. They also provide insights into Cambodia’s complex relationship with Western modernity and into how traditional medicine became integrated into the public health system. The chapter also examines the interview process used to solicit testimony from doctors who lived under the Khmer Rouge. This process involved inviting the doctors to take a biographical journey, immersing themselves anew in the past.
